    Obama scholars reside at Columbia World Projects, scholars work on projects that will have a significant and long-lasting positive impact on people’s lives, point the way to solutions to intractable problems, and enrich research and scholarship. Columbia World Projects is a new initiative that aims to systematically bring university research out into the world in the form of projects. The academic year will include CWP programs for scholars.

    After completing the program, Obama Foundation Scholars return to the areas where they have been working and continue their path of service, strengthened by their experience.

    The program’s goal is to assist Obama Foundation Scholars in applying the contacts and abilities they develop during the program for the benefit of their communities, nations, and regions. We anticipate that after the program is over, Obama Foundation Scholars will continue to be involved with the organization.

    • Asia-Pacific: American Samoa; Australia; Brunei; Cambodia; China; Cook Islands; Federated States of Micronesia; Fiji; French Polynesia; Guam; Hawai`i; Hong Kong; Indonesia; Japan; Kiribati; Korea, North (DPRK); Korea, South (ROK); Laos; Malaysia; Marshall Islands; Mongolia; Myanmar; Nauru; New Caledonia; Macao; New Zealand; Niue; Northern Mariana Islands; Palau; Papua New Guinea; Philippines; Pitcairn Islands; Samoa; Singapore; Solomon Islands; Taiwan; Thailand; Timor-Leste; Tokelau; Tonga; Tuvalu; Vanuatu; Vietnam; Wallis and Futuna.

    Please be aware that this particular program is not open to citizens of South Asian nations. Future leadership programs for South Asian nations are anticipated by the Obama Foundation.</div>

    Citizenship/Residency: For the region in which you are applying, at least one of the following requirements must be met:

    • You are a permanent resident of an eligible country or territory OR you are a citizen of one of those countries or territories OR
    • You are a refugee or asylum seeker in a country or territory that is eligible OR
    • Regardless of your immigration status, you have spent the last five years living in a country or territory that qualifies.

    Geographic Focus: Your present and upcoming work is geographically focused on bringing about positive change in your neighborhood, a nation or territory that qualifies, and/or the larger area for which you are seeking.

    Leadership experience: You can demonstrate that you have at least three years of significant leadership experience in your topic area.

    Age: On July 15, 2023, you will be between the ages of 24 and 45.

    English proficiency: You are skilled in English on a professional level (spoken and written).

    Political Campaigns: Between February 1 and July 15, 2023, you will pause from running any political elections.

    Program Commitment: Between February 1 and July 15, 2023, you can commit to fully participating in the program, which will include a three-day in-person convening (subject to public health, safety, and security conditions) in late June or early July and up to 12 hours of live virtual programming each month.

    Duration and Benefit

    • An allowance each month to help with living costs in New York City
    • A fully equipped studio apartment close to Columbia University
    • The full cost of four courses at Columbia University, including all fees.
    • For the length of the program, basic health, dental, and life insurance will be provided.
    • flights to and from the country of residence, as well as other program-related activities
    • The Obama Foundation’s leadership development programs will give students the practical knowledge, skills, and experiences they need to increase the impact of their work when they return home.

    The following qualities describe the preferred candidates:

    • possesses a distinct area of focus and is able to define or assess their influence thus far.
    • holds a position of leadership in their change-making activity, whether they do it full-time or as volunteers.
    • exemplifies a deeply moral, values-based, fair, and cooperative style of leadership
    • exhibits a readiness to collaborate and learn from other leaders in a group situation.

    Over the years, they have come to understand that while many candidates may exhibit many or all of these qualities, due to capacity restrictions, they are unable to accept every applicant to this extremely selective program. They therefore make an effort to carefully choose a diverse group of participants whose viewpoints and experiences will compliment one another.
