So you’ve been looking at tech and considering a career change but it’s looking like an insurmountable challenge. How do you get into tech? How do you start? Where do you start? Should you even try it at all?

Never fear, all your questions are valid. This is why we will be starting a series on how you can begin to make sense of your inclinations towards tech and maybe take a bold step into making it a full time career with zero experience.

Step one: Find an industry that’s already related to your hobbies or current career.

This will give you a chance to provide value to the company beyond the raw tech skills you’re bringing to the table. You know the lingo, the market, and the things people care about there. All of this gives you an edge in your application process from cover letters to interviews.

Here are some ideas of natural industry transitions:

    • Teacher: EdTech: Coursera or Nearpod
    • Doctor, nurse, dentist, fitness professional, therapist: HealthTech: Tempus for doctors and Nurse grid for nurses.
    • Fashion/beauty: FashionTech or wearable tech: Fitbit is a fitness wristband and Perfectly helps people style clothing.
    • Catering/hospitality: FoodTech: like Window Solution, which automates food waste capture using AI

These are just a few of the options to explore! Making a list will give you more certainty and you’re well on your way to the second step!
