    What is an HND qualification?

A Highest National Diploma (HND) is a level 5 vocational qualification provided by higher and further education colleges. HND’s are practical-based courses, ideal for those wanting to enter the workforce or study towards a Bachelor’s degree.

Can you study in Germany with an HND qualification?

All public and private Universities in Germany accept HND for Bachelor’s admission into year one. But your HND must be related to the prospective course of admission.

Can you apply for a Masters degree with an HND?

You can’t use HND to apply for Masters program. HND is just a diploma and not a degree, so you need to have a Bachelor’s degree first before you can apply for Masters degree.

What institution accepts an HND qualification?

Holders of an HND are entitled to apply for a Bachelor’s degree in a University of Applied Science in Germany. These Universities also award Bachelor’s and Masters degree but have a stronger practical focus on teaching professional skills.

There are no HND top-up courses in Germany so you would need to start from year one when admitted.

To learn more about how you can study with an HND qualification from Nigeria abroad, here is a guide written by @deborahetim that will answer most, if not all, of your questions.

    Thank you for this information.
Do you maybe know some specific German universities that will accept this qualification?

I get this question a lot of time and would like to know.

Thank you for this. But do you perhaps know if one could use the HND for a postgraduate course instead of starting a degree from year one.

This is possible in other countries, like the US, Canada and the UK, but most likely not in Germany.
Perhaps other European countries like Poland and the likes may accept it too.

Have you read this article: https://setlinn.com/study-abroad-with-an-hnd/

      Maybe it will help.

    What about OND holders?

That’s a good one. It doesn’t seem to be recognized in Germany, not even for a Bachelor’s degree. You will still need a foundation course to study in Germany with that.
Wouldn’t you consider Studienkolleg option to study in Germany?

This has been a headache for me for years.

I have HND and did a top up to BSc which is 5 semester in total.

How do I use my BSc for masters admission?

If you have a B.Sc. already, then you qualify well for a Masters degree program.

You just need to search for your courses of interest and follow the application process. For Germany, as you know, you can also study in English language and tuition free.

There’s really no issue here since you already have a B.Sc. Or is there something else that you’d like to know?

yes. You see, the admission requirement is at least 3 years or a 6 semester bachelor degree.
but my BSc is two year top-up of my HND which has only 5 semesters in total.
This is the headach, besides that my gpa is low

Well, there are two ways to go about it; apply anyways and see if you will be taken, or contact the school in advance and ask them before starting the application. So, no need to stress yourself a lot.

i have tried to contact the schools, but to my surprise, non of them are able to give me a satisfying answer. all that they keep saying is for me to apply first for them to review my application

Well, at least you got a response from them and something to work with. I’d recommend you proceed with the application.

Meanwhile, could you share the name of the courses and universities that you applied to?

It’d helpful to other people here as well.

I have an HND in Mechanical Engineering do you think I can get admitted to undergraduate studies for a Computer Science degree in Germany?

Your HND is (will) be accepted for undergraduate studies in Germany.

Do you have some universities in mind already?

I was worried considering I studied Mechanical Engineering and planning to make a switch to computer science

Nope – that wouldn’t be a problem; you have more than the basic requirements for undergraduate Computer Science.

Which schools do you have in mind already?
