When you think of pyramids, your mind automatically goes to Egypt. Did you know that there are pyramids in Sudan? These pyramids can be found in the ancient city of Meroë. These pyramids are called Nubian pyramids and there are over 200 of them along the banks of the River Nile. The Nubian pyramids were constructed in different eras and are significantly smaller than the pyramids of Giza in Egypt.

Meroë is recorded to be home to royalty between 592 B.C and 350 A.D and currently, the Nubian pyramids are tombs of kings and queens from the Kingdom of Kush. Kush was a powerful kingdom that had an influence on the Middle East and significantly on some areas in Africa. The kingdom’s wealth mostly came from iron trading. They also dealt in textiles, pieces of jewellery and pottery exportation.

Now, back to the pyramids. Although some of the pyramids were damaged by treasure hunters in search of treasures in the tombs, there is still a lot for tourists to see at Meroe. Although they are smaller than the pyramids in Egypt, they are just as impressive. Some of the tomb walls have intricate carvings and hieroglyphics can be seen in one of the rooms at the Meroë pyramids. Tourists also get to experience temples and palace ruins that were made visible through the excavation expedition of John Garstang in 1910. Also, there are tour guides with camels to show you around and make the experience memorable.
