Many international students always hope to secure internships in the USA to further enrich their study abroad experiences and their potential of being employed by some of the big tech companies. While internships make up an integral part of any form of computer science education, they are highly demanding especially in a place like the USA. They help students to become actively involved in the industry, gain a first-hand practical experience in their career in the field and establish a network between them and potential employers.

International students usually take many more steps than US citizens applying for the same positions. Here are a few tips on how to secure an internship position in the USA as an international student.

First, one must have gotten governmental authorization as an international student to make sure that they can work.

The next step is to apply for various internship openings based on your desire. One must be willing to apply to as many companies as possible. This is because getting a placement is not very easy for local students. it is even worse for international students who have to put in extra effort by applying to more companies. The more applications, the better.

While internships are usually secured based on the relationship shared between the institution and the company, some international students can still submit their resumes and cover letters to their desired companies. Internship for international students is usually based on one form of course credit. This is based on the federal guidelines of Curricular Practical Training (CPT) and Optional Practical Training (OPT).

The majority of computer science internships are found in cities like New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, and Northern California. However, internship positions are open anywhere in the USA. Prominent companies that offer internships are Apple, Microsoft, Google and Oracle.
